How did AngularJS get so popular when it is so horribly designed?

Three things:

First, it was the age of JQuery. Several frameworks (including Angular) came in with a revolutionary new idea – manual DOM manipulation is dumb. We should be letting the language take care of that for us. That idea was enough to make everyone sit up and listen. It was a massive leap forward in the state of the art. (The same idea continues now, with a much better design, in projects like React, Om and Elm.)

Second, of the frameworks spearheading this revolution, Angular was probably the most production-ready. I often say that Angular was the first quality implementation of the wrong design.

Third, it had the word Google stamped on it. And that wins a lot of credibility, especially with risk-averse, not-that-technical managers. And especially in an age when Google was seen as being at the forefront of every cool tech idea.
